Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga fined & apologizes for Wembley incident

Chelsea fined the keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga one week’s wages following his refusal to be substituted in the league cup final defeat by Manchester city at Wembley.

Kepa appeared to be injured after he prevented Sergio Aguero of Manchester City from scoring in the closing time of extra hours, so manager Maurizio Sarri ordered his substitution before Chelsea went on to lose the match 4-3 on penalties.

But then Kepa refused the change and insisted that he was fit to continue and face the penalty shootout however by the time the substitution was displayed in the stadium by the fourth official and Chelsea’s reserve keeper Willy Caballero was also ready to come in however the refusal gave a rise to Sarri’s anger.

After the match which finished at 0-0, the coach Sarri said that there had been a big misunderstanding as he thought that Kepa got injured and had a cramp while preventing the City’s player from scoring.

Arrizabalaga had apologized to the Italian Coach, his team members and the fans while Chelsea punished him for what he has done.

The Chelsea club came on a decision to fine Arrizabalaga one week’s wages and to donate it to Chelsea foundation.

Arrizabalaga and the coach both issued statements in order to clarify their parts following a controversy which becomes the headlines around the globe.

I have thought a lot about yesterday’s events. Although there was a misunderstanding on reflection, the way I handled the situation was a big mistake, Kepa said.

I wanted to take the time to apologize coach, Wily, team mates and to the club. I have done this and now I offer the same apology to my fans.

He further stated that he will learn from the episode and is ready to accept the discipline or penalty the club decides.

Arrizabalaga became the world’s most expensive goal keeper when he joined the team for 80 million Euros last year.

In his statement, Sarri said that Arrizabalaga and I have spoken about the incident, he has apologized for his weird reaction to the decision, and there was a misunderstanding but he realized his mistake for reacting that way.

He has apologized to me, his team mates and the club, now it’s up to the Chelsea club to decide if they want to discipline him according to the club rules; the matter is closed from my side.

In the competitive cup final, the performance of whole team was highly positive but this incident has overshadowed the efforts of the team.

The defeat against Manchester City was the end of Chelsea’s hopes for the domestic trophy this season. The Blues are 16 points off the premier league leaders liver pools in sixth place but are through the last 16 of the Europa league.

Till now Chelsea have only managed six wins in their past 12 games, which included a 6-0 league defeat by Manchester City and a 4-0 thumping at Bournemouth.

Chelsea has never been in such disarray, they are now. It was a question to Sarri as he is with them as a coach but things are not happening right and it doesn’t seem to be better soon with time.

The former Blues striker Chris Sutton said that the Chelsea club is not winning any leading titles in the near future. He referred the case involving Kepa and told it’s a mutiny and anarchy where the Chelsea was lawless.

He further stated that this team of Chelsea players won’t be able to challenge for a Champions League and a Premier League in the near future.
